The "AI bot" space has fragmented fast: every major lab now ships a consumer assistant — ChatGPT (OpenAI), Claude (Anthropic), Gemini (Google), Grok (xAI), Copilot (Microsoft), Meta AI / Muse (Meta), Perplexity, Le Chat (Mistral)… They all answer questions, but they differ on underlying models, capabilities, integration, price, and philosophy. Here's an honest field-by-field comparison to help you choose — or, more realistically, use several in parallel.

The main contenders

ChatGPT (OpenAI)

  • Models: GPT-5 / GPT-4o / o-series (reasoning).
  • Strengths: the reference, broadest ecosystem, voice, vision, tools, custom GPTs, the largest user base.
  • Weaknesses: data retention by default (opt-out exists), responses sometimes "polished" and bland.
  • Price: free tier (limited); Plus ~$20/mo; Team/Enterprise more.

Claude (Anthropic)

  • Models: Claude Opus / Sonnet / Haiku.
  • Strengths: excellent for long documents (200k context), code, and nuanced writing; strong on "honesty"; the Artifacts feature.
  • Weaknesses: smaller third-party ecosystem than OpenAI; no image generation natively.
  • Price: free tier (limited); Pro ~$20/mo; API metered (see comparator).

Gemini (Google)

  • Models: Gemini 2.5 Pro / Flash / Nano.
  • Strengths: native multimodal (text + image + audio + video), deep integration with Google Workspace (Docs, Gmail, Drive), very long context (1M+).
  • Weaknesses: quality variable across versions; data used for Google's training by default.
  • Price: free tier; Advanced ~$20/mo (bundled with Google One).

Grok (xAI)

  • Models: Grok-3 / Grok-4.
  • Strengths: real-time access to X (Twitter), less censorship, a "rebellious" tone, image generation via FLUX.
  • Weaknesses: smaller ecosystem; quality a step behind the leaders on some benchmarks.
  • Price: bundled with X Premium+; API metered.

Copilot (Microsoft)

  • Models: OpenAI GPT family + others.
  • Strengths: deep integration with Microsoft 365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), enterprise security, GitHub Copilot for code.
  • Weaknesses: effectively a ChatGPT wrapper in M365; data handling varies by plan.
  • Price: free tier; Copilot Pro ~$20/mo; enterprise plans.

Muse / Meta AI (Meta)

  • Models: Llama-based; "Muse" used for some generation features.
  • Strengths: integrated into Instagram/WhatsApp/Messenger; open weights for Llama (runnable locally); free.
  • Weaknesses: consumer quality below the leaders; context limited.
  • Price: free in Meta apps.

Perplexity

  • Models: orchestrates several (GPT, Claude, Llama, in-house).
  • Strengths: cited web search, the "answer engine" angle, great for research.
  • Weaknesses: not a generalist "assistant"; less suited to long creative work.
  • Price: free tier; Pro ~$20/mo.

Privacy and data

Every assistant has different data policies. By default, your conversations may be used to train the provider's models (OpenAI and Anthropic offer opt-out; Google uses them unless you disable it; xAI retains X data). For sensitive use, check the "data retention" settings — or go local (see the local AI guide).

The honest verdict

  • No single winner: each shines in a niche. Most power users keep 2-3 subscriptions and pick per task.
  • For code & docs: Claude.
  • For ecosystem & voice: ChatGPT.
  • For Workspace & long context: Gemini.
  • For research with citations: Perplexity.
  • For real-time social: Grok.
  • For free & open weights: Llama via Meta AI, or local.
